Christians Are Always Learning

Christians are always students, always learners. As the Lord said to Moses,

And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart: and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up. [Deuteronomy 6:6-7]

The Lord wants His Word to be in our hearts and on our lips, that our thoughts would always be on the Lord's Word. That we would always be speaking His Word to our families and neighbors.

The devil, on the other hand, is always trying to snatch the Lord's Word from our hearts and tear it away from us [See St Matthew 13:19]. It is God's will, therefore, that Christians always remain students and learners, who sit, like Mary, at the feet of Jesus and listen to His Word [St Luke 10:39-42].

As Luther reminds us in his introduction to the Large Catechism, Christians are always students because God is always our teacher. “God Himself is not ashamed to teach it [the catechism] daily, for He knows of nothing better to teach, and He always keeps on teaching this one thing without varying it with anything new or different. All the saints know of nothing better or different to learn, though they cannot learn it to perfection.”

We rejoice that the Lord Jesus has given us so many opportunities to study His Word here at Hope Lutheran Church. The Sunday worship services, Sunday Bible Class (and Sunday School for the children), our Tuesday morning romp through Romans, and, beginning Wednesday, September 14th, our Lutheranism 101 class covering the Scriptures and the Catechism are all wonderful opportunities to hear, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest the Lord's wonderful Word. I encourage you all to take advantage of these time of worship and study.

May we all continue to delight in the Lord's Word to us, and find in His Word our life, salvation and the forgiveness of all of our sins.
